I’ve set aside Wednesdays to reflect on political concerns, what I think of as democracy, yes, please. My mood today has been lifted by such lovely election results. So I will take a moment to cheer for the winners in Virginia, New Jersey, New York, California, and even places like Georgia and Mississippi, not to mention several promising municipal wins here in North Carolina.
I know that the challenges we face can’t be fixed by one election cycle. And any elected leader, no matter how talented, cannot unilaterally change everything. But it definitely helps to see some good people win. The flood of bad news this year has been so intense that I almost couldn’t believe this was possible–that some of us could elect leaders who are decent and compassionate, motivated to make things better for the people they serve, rather than seeking to corrupt the systems to gain personal profit and power for its own sake.
Funny. I have been reminding myself during this dark year that the work is still the work. No matter who is in charge or how dire the outlook, you get up every day looking for ways to care for one another and to respect the rights and dignity of every human being.
So nothing has changed in that respect. But the load feels lighter, nonetheless.
